Fun with Fruits & Veggies
This past week I was able to work with several different Growing Chefs! volunteer teams and classrooms. Continuing to meet so many students has been such a fun experience for me, and this week in particular we got to have a lot of fun with fruits and veggies. This week’s lessons included a variety of activities that really engaged all of the students.
First, there was a lettuce taste testing where the students had an opportunity to learn about and try several different lettuce and leafy green varieties, including ones such as mustard greens, butter lettuce, dandelion greens, spinach, pea shoots, and some that I had not even heard of before! Some of them were even harvested from their own classroom gardens. Students were encouraged to taste the lettuce and use descriptive words to explain both the tastes and textures they were experiencing.
Next was mine, as well as the student’s, personal favorite – Foods with Moods! This activity had the students use items such as dried pasta and black eyed peas to create their own vegetable character. They were all so creative! Some were animals like elephants and pigs, while others created characters such as ‘Grandpa Pepper’, giving them moods and background stories. It was great to see the kids having so much fun and the best part … everything was edible! Here are a few photos of the great creations done in the classrooms.
