Celebrate Good Times (with Growing Chefs!) Come On!

June 25, 2013

Julina here,

Today was an exciting day, graduation day! I spent the morning at Hasting’s Elementary in Mr. Foraone’s class. We started the day by having a grade 3 class come in for a gallery walk of the students’ Growing Chefs! posters. The students were proud of their work and were eager to share what they had learned from Growing Chefs! with the younger students. Here are a few examples of their great work:

local tomatoes vs. "far away" tomatoes. I love the sensei's moustache!

I was told that the "far away" tomato is crying because he is covered in chemicals and he smells.

After the gallery walk, Chef Nicki sat in the “chair of honour” and read the last chapter of “A City of Gardens”. The students were relieved that the story had a happy ending, and they discussed how the city had changed since the beginning of the story. After the story the students each chose a plant to take home from their planters. Once most of the plants were harvested, we brought the planters outside and returned the used soil to the Earth to help other plants grow.

Time to graduate! After 3 months the big day had finally arrived, each student received their graduation certificate and were declared Growing Chefs!

Finally it was time to unveil the winners of the Great Rainbow Stir fry Challenge! The students had waited all week to find out which stir fry won which award. We had our own Growing Chefs! Emmy Awards show, with Mr. Faraone as the host (he  even dressed for the part)!

Gummy worms for the "most colourful", Mints for the "best use of herbs", spicy cinnamon gummies for the "Spiciest", and "lego blocks" for the most unique stir fry

Our drum rolls got too loud and the class below us called in to complain! From then on we did finger drum rolls as the winners were announced.

After thanking the students, the chefs, and sharing our favourite moments we had a dance party to "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang
