Vegetables with Attitude
Last week I encountered a lot of moody vegetables.
It was our “Foods with Moods” week, and after reading Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann’s delightful book How Are You Peeling, students used various vegetables, beans, and the old craft/food standard macaroni to make some ingenious, edible, and very moody creations.
While at first some of the kids may have been at a loss for how to give a vegetable a personality, a few turns in the hand tended to reveal that the vegetable had a personality of its own—it was the kids’ job, much as Michelangelo sculpted, to simply let it out.
Here’s a small sampling of the moody veggie menagerie from various classes around the city:
While some might point to last week’s spectacular weather, I like to think my own great mood was influenced rather by the whimsical creatures I met throughout the week. Good work to all our growing chefs (there’s a bright future for some of you in character bento)!
